Avi Perry--Biography
Dr. Avi Perry, a talk show host at Paltalk News Network (PNN), is the author of "Fundamentals of Voice Quality Engineering in Wireless Networks," and more recently, "72 Virgins," a thriller about the covert war on Islamic terror. He was Vice President at NMS Communications, a Bell Laboratories - distinguished staff member and manager, as well as a delegate of the US and Lucent Technologies to the ITU—the UN International Standards body in Geneva, a professor at Northwestern University and an Intelligence expert for the Israeli Government. He may be reached through his web site www.aviperry.org
Avi was born in Israel. As a teenager and throughout his college years, he was a professional musician. He financed his student life with numerous gigs, playing with his Israeli band, writing songs, playing the various keyboard instruments, and enjoying listening to his performances on the Israeli radio (there was no MTV in late 60s Israel). He still plays and writes music, but as a hobby (at home), rather than as a line of work.
After graduating from high school (Reáli) in Haifa in the early 60s, Avi joined Lahakt Pikud Zafon—a select army troupe, which traveled daily across Israel, entertaining the troops in the field, raising morale. In his role as a troupe member and later as the troupe leader, he played the accordion and acted in sitcoms. He also produced, directed and played in a variety show, launched during a brief interim period between major show runs directed by Israel's most prominent showbiz personalities at that time--Haim Topol (a.k.a. Tevye in the movie--Fiddler on the roof), Oded Kotler, Effi Netzer, Arie Levanon, and Danny Litaii.
During the Six-Day-War in 1967, he was called away from his university studies to serve in the Israeli military reserves as an intelligence expert (including daring stunts behind enemy lines on the Golan Heights). He gained valuable and relevant experience in covert communications technology and a variety of spy craft and methods. That experience became even more relevant during the months and years following the war, where it was put into practice in military and state security applications.
Avi spent the past four decades in the US, first as a Ph.D. student, then as a professor at Northwestern University, as a distinguished staff member and manager at Bell Laboratories, and as a delegate of the US and Lucent Technologies to the ITU—the UN International Standards body in Geneva. Lastly, he was Vice President at NMS Communications, in charge of voice quality technologies.
As a professor at Northwestern University Dr. Perry worked on a research project—a mathematical algorithm designed for solving certain type of optimization problems. The algorithm, or a variant of which, is being used today inside Microsoft Excel as part of its optimization module-- “Solver”. When you open that application and try to optimize that type of a problem, you are faced with the option of using either The Perry Algorithm—named Conjugate Gradient, or Newton’s algorithm. As Avi puts it: "I find this amazing. People have a choice between one of the greatest scientists in human history and little me."
Following his early retirement in 2004 he established a consulting firm, Dr. Avi Perry Consulting (see www.aviperry.com) where he has done consulting for Wall Street analysts and for several international hi-tech companies. Furthermore, he wrote a popular technical book. The title Fundamentals of Voice Quality Engineering in Wireless Networks was published by Cambridge University Press in 2007 and became very popular. Readers praised the book for its thoroughness and for Perry's refreshing, unique and entertaining writing style, atypical among technical writers. Throughout Avi's tenure at NMS, he wrote many short (humor-packed, peppered with company culture) satires, technical reports, white papers (published on company website), press releases, and more.
Avi’s latest novel-- 72 Virgins-- is about Jihad terrorism and the security agencies' struggle to thwart its stratagem and trounce the perpetrators. The story is built on life experiences that combine technology know-how, familiarity with spy craft, Human Intelligence (HUMINT), Electronic Surveillance (SIGINT), understanding of Middle Eastern cultures and history, a great sense of humor, and a talent for writing--all breathe authenticity into the setting.
In recent years, Dr. Perry has been hosting a popular talk show on Paltalk News Network (PNN), titled "Politically Incorrect Straight Talk with Dr. Avi Perry," where he discusses and analyzes current political, social and economic issues with special emphasis on US politics, Arab-Israeli conflict, Islam, stealth Jihad, and the global economy. In addition to the American and Israeli media, his opinion and analysis have also been sought by al-Jazeera. He has also been (still is) writing a popular political column on a regular basis for The Jerusalem Post newspaper, Premium op-eds section, Israel National News, The Jewish Reporter, and various online Magazines.
