Where did the Notion of 72 Virgins in Islamic Paradise Come from?

Islamic leaders, seeking to motivate would be suicide bombers, inducing them to commit murder in the name of Allah, have been quoting Islamic sources, which promise 72 Virgins in Paradise to those who kill and are killed in Jihad for Allah.

Many Muslims, especially those exposed to Western culture, are aware of the jokes and the ridicule that the 72 Virgins legend has brought upon them and upon their brother believers. Consequently, they blame the Jews for spreading the myth in an attempt to downgrade the image of the Islamic "freedom fighters".

Despite the disclaimer by some Muslims, the truth is very clear. The 72 Virgins notion has its origins in the Qur'an. Although the holy book does not specify the number as 72, it does say that those who fight in the way of Allah and are killed will be given a great reward. It goes on to stipulate that Muslims will be awarded with women in Islamic heaven. It even describes their physical attributes—large eyes (Q 56:22) and big, firm, round "swelling breasts" that are not inclined to sagging (Q 78:33). The Qur'an refers to these virgins as houri, companions of equal age, but the highly-flavored emphasis of their bodily characteristics, including their virginity, gave rise to many hadiths and other Islamic writings.

Hadith 2687 is where the number 72 is mentioned. "The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and 72 houri, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from al-Jabiyyah to San'a."

Qur'anic commentator Al-Suyuti (died 1505) and Orthodox Muslim theologians such as al Ghazali (died 1111 CE) and Al-Ash'ari (died 935 CE) graphically elaborated sensual pleasures attributed to Muslims in paradise". Al-Suyuti wrote, "Each time we sleep with a Houri we find her virgin. Besides, the penis of the Elected never softens. The erection is eternal; the sensation that you feel each time you make love is utterly delicious and out of this world and were you to experience it in this world you would faint. Each chosen one [i.e. Muslim] will marry seventy houris, besides the women he married on earth, and all will have appetizing vaginas."

On the whole, the Qur'an and the hadiths are filled with sexual fantasies that Muslim men are awarded when they reach Islamic heaven. Anas bin Malik, an Islamic scholar, claimed that "The Prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number… The Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men)." Muhammad (hadith 24) apparently claimed that devout Muslims would be given the sexual strength of 100 persons upon their arrival in Heaven. (This is apparently more than what was attributed to the prophet himself).

The sexual obsession by Muslim men as conveyed by Islamic writings, takes its cue from the founder of the religion. The description depicts him as a sexual predator. Aisha, Muhammad's wife since she was a nine-year-old girl, described her sexual experiences with the prophet. When she was six years old, he could not have intercourse with her due to her young age. As a consolation prize, he placed his penis between her thighs and massaged it softly. Aisha explained that unlike other believers, the prophet had control over his penis."

Being consistent with its sexual obsession and predatory practices, the Qur'an permits pedophilia (sura 65:4). It also discusses rape in detail. It lets you know that men can rape female slaves and captives (Q 23:6), even in front of their husbands (Q 4:24). Other writings advise that when having sex with captives, it's better if you don't pull out at the end (Sahih Bukhari 3:46:718).

It's no wonder that 72 Virgins in Paradise are a fundamental piece of Islamic culture. Sex, sex abuse, pedophilia, and enslavement of women take central stage within that religion. Encouraging martyrdom by pointing to sexual rewards in heaven is a natural corollary of that tradition. Although the Qur'an may not be as specific, it nevertheless, offers many clues, which subsequent inscriptions reinforced, interpreted, and broadened.

I have written this article in response to many questions I had been asked by book club members who'd read my book 72 Virgins. In that book, I did not discuss the roots of that evil thinking. Instead, I told a story, a thriller about a group of Jihadi terrorists and their quest for martyrdom. The story builds on the Jihadists' motivation for targeting so many innocents and exploiting the victims' massacre as a stepping-stone to their dream of eternal paradise next to Allah's throne. The real question I've tried to answer is not whether Jihadists' plots will ever cease to emerge. There's no chance of that. The question the book seeks to answer is—will the next one be stopped before it's too late?

You should try reading all those verses in their full context before speaking downright lies, especially 4:24

You are absolutely right. Allah gives us free will. That is why the messenger stated that you shouldnt, not that you couldn't. Nowhere does the Qur'an state that there will be 72 virgins. It states only a pure woman.

the words in Hadiths cannot be placed next to the words from the Quran. The quran was sent down by Allah, the hadiths are interpretations and stories from humans. Not the same and pretending to make it so would be wrong IMO

It is interesting that the author of this article has become so obsessed with disliking Islam that he blindly spews lies about the Islamic prophet. Muhammad never killed a single Jew on his life. Nor did he allow anyone to kill any Jew during his life. He actually loved Jews so much that even if a funeral procession of a Jewish man or woman passed him, he would rush to his feet and remain in this position until the procession was out of sight, and many Arabs in Yathrib were irked by Mohammed’s love for Jews. But he would burst into tears upon seeing a Jew in distress, and once, when others were insulting a Jewish woman, he consoled her saying ‘why could you not reply to them and say you are the daughter, niece and sister of thousands of prophets?’ In fact, Mohamed’s own grandmother was Jewish and this made him consider Jews to be his blood kinsmen. One of the many slanders in his name was that of Khaybar, where Mohammed was not even present and not one person was killed by him or his friends. The atrocity stories of Khaybar and Banu quraiza were utterly falsified long after his death. Not a single Jew died and that tribe was alive and well long after the Mohammed’s death. The whole community lived there along with 27 of their tribes. People made up this story after an incident where an Arab girl was sexually assaulted in a Jewish store by several Jewish men and they did not hand over the criminals for justice. 9 men were killed for killing her brother and raping her and that was all. There was a treaty where Jews would follow their own Torah laws including stoning adulterers to death, even though Mohammed abhorred that cruel practice since it contradicted Koran’s laws. but “NO ONE DIED”! It was a story made up long after Muhammad’s death by some Christians of Levant who wanted to turn the Jews of that city against Moslems.
Many Jews later mixed it up with the story of 900 jews fighting the Roman emperors and getting surrounded in a siege and later some of them killed themselves in Masada. They took that story of the Jewish rebellion against the romans that happened 600 years before Muhammad and put that whole story in his name. Most of Muhammad’s history was written by Jewish and Levantine Christian scholars of that time because they were educated and held power for 73 years after the prophet’s death destroying his entire life’s story and filling it with sheer lies and misquoting the companions of the prophet. Only the Quran was preserved because of memorization. Read Richard Windsor’s book “About Muhammad” if you want to know details about his life.

Thirdly, muslims will ALWAYS deny everything which they know we think as shocking and will always say it is out of context. Something like this CANNOT be out of context. When you are supposed to be in HEAVEN with God, there should not be any reason for sex and whatever. One has gone to a NON PHYSICAL world once you leave this world. Therefore, there is something VERY fishy going on.

Helena - Pick up a Quran and read those verses yourself. This article is a straight-out lie! NONE of those verses allow a man to rape a woman, not even his wife! Men are to treat their wives with kindness and respect - rape is not kindness. I have read all these verses several times. This is simply spreading more hate. The myth of 72 virgins is simply that - a myth! There is no such thing in the Quran. Educate yourself instead of trusting ignorant articles on the Internet. Peace and blessings to you.

Later in the Revelation of John the apostle, Jesus Messiah, the Word of God, the Truth from God, says - "Behold I make ALL thiings new, behold old things (earthly activities) are passed and away and all things have become new."

Foolish men in their pride want a Paradise of their own making, but that will never be fulfilled.
They will never obtain the true Paradise as long as they refuse to go through the narrow gate - Jesus Messiah.

The Islamic heaven promises eternal purity, meaning there will be no sexual relation in paradise, as men and women will not be intimate, but Christians from Levant lied about Mohammed and reported fake traditions claiming Moslems are promised virgins in heaven. None of it is accurate. Jewish scholars later added this 72 myth in Islam. The number 72 in Judaism appears in both Talmudic and mystical lore because 72 was a significant number for the 71-member Sanhedrin which ruled Israel in the Second Temple era and, on occasion, added an extra sage whose reputation was to equal all the others in number. According to Jewish scholars, 72 is also the number of groups of three-letter words, 216 in all, of God’s holy names, spelled out in the mystical work Sefer Ha Yashar, that is ascribed to Rabbi Akiva.

It seems that the hadiths were quoted, not the Quran verses. Hadiths are interpretations from humans, not the words of God himself so while the author has a point of reference, the reference cannot be taken seriously as anyone that has read the Quran would know that sex outside of marriage with whomever is forbidden completely. A married person would be expected to control themselves (all married persons, gender is irrelevant) when away from their spouses.

The Qur'an allows for lying for a few reasons, one is to defend Islam.
The various English versions, and other international language translations have been sanitised, watered down to give the religion a more favourable look.

The Arabic Qur'anic text also has quite a number of variations. Each kind is quite distinct to the others, NOT being EXACTLY the same as Muslim.scholars have been claiming for a long time.

From my Christian research about my upcoming visual book on Heaven and Hell I strongly believe the jihad will spend eternity in the lowest part of Hell where the worst of Fallen Angels live. Biblical scripture seems to divide Hell into three parts as those who don't believe go to the upper part, those who hated Christians and Jew s go to the middle part and those who killed go to the lowest. True paradise is for true believers and followers in Jesus Chris.

The Hadiths were written by MEN hundreds of years after the Prophet (pbuH) died. These are NOT Allah's words. They are men twisting ideas to their way. The Quran makes it very clear that men should have no sex with anyone except their wives and any captives they own (back in those days the whole world had captives!). And men were instructed to treat their women with kindness and respect, so clearly, rape is NOT allowed. It is against the Quran and Allah. Peace

But the quran holds Mary higher the Yeshuah..and does it not give a description of Mary and a palm tree which was an old version of Apollo being born...in ancient mythology and tradition..The spirit does not have to do a carnal act for Mary to conceive...Also the quran considers Mary was born of holy conception...The hadiths are worth nothing and be sure that when the Damascus ...If Mohhamad be the great last prophet then obviously he has NO successor...why would a prophet have a blood relative successor...that is nuts...or was he the King?..so when Ali was slain and ummayad caliphate burnt all qurans bar 5 that their scribes wrote or copied there is a good chance modification or certain things were ommited or varied..no where in the history of prophets was there a blood relative successor unless god chose.

Allah cannot give you peace.
Allah cannot give you hope.
Allah cannot give you unconditional, unfailing love.
Allah can never talk with you personally.
Allah cannot answer your prayers for your peace.
Allah cannot give you joy.
Allah rejoices over your suffering, your blindness, your ignorance, your despair.
Allah is glad when you sin, because that means you think you need to do more good works to balance out your sins.
Allah is a hard task master, with no pity, no compassion, no kindness.
Muhammad brags about how wonderful Allah is yet Allah shows none of those claimed good things.
Allah never spoke to any Muslim personally, nor can any Muslim speak to Allah personally.
Go and ask Allah to reveal Himself personally to you. Ask him every day for 6 months. You will be wasting your breath.

CONTRAST:
Go to Jesus Christ and begin to ask Him to reveal Himself to you everyday for the next month. If you are genuine, He will do just that.
Which ever God reveals himself to you personally, then worship him.

Men rape women all over the world, regardless of faith or beliefs, how is that a reflection on the quran/bible or any other religion in that sense? Ah, it is ironic how you hate the one man in the world who loves you the most. Some Arabs would be horrified to see how Muhammad was fond of the Jews and how he desperately defended them against all the hatred they used to receive. There have been many incidents where Jewish residents try to assault and beat and even try to kill Muhammad but he always forgave the Jews and he constantly tried to help them live happily together within their community. Matthew 19:29 does not specify any virgins. When correctly read and understood this passage is saying that "they will receive a value 100 times the value of houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields". The VALUE of what they receive will be more than the value of " houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields. The interpretation that they will receive 100 actual houses etc. etc. is faux! The correct interpretation is that "what they will receive as a VALUE (unspecified) greater than VALUE of " houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields"! It is the VALUE of what (unspecified reward) they receive that will be greater!

The writer never claimed the Quran mentioned the #72. However, it is mentioned in the Quran about houris which are virgins or fair maidens. Suras 44, 52, 55, 56, and 78. From these suras some scholars have stated Hadith's that are hasan or good Hadith's which state the 72 virgins. Now accepting and believing it or not is up to you.

Actually, this is difficult for me to understand why if he is very powerful he needs me to kill for him. Can he not do it himself? Also we know that Mohammad had a child bride (whats her name Aisha?). We also know the violence that has always fueled Islamic conquest since its founding. These are not good signs at all for a religion that has to be referred to as "peaceful"--I guess what they really meant was that peace will eventually come to you when you die from the hands of the terrorist. So read some more, preferably from the source itself--the Quoran and Hadith.

To understand a religion correctly, one must examine the life of its founder, not the lives of the followers.

The New Testament has all the necessary details of the life of Jesus especially when He began His short public ministry for 3yrs 6months, before He was crucified on the wooden Cross during the time of Pontius Pilate the Roman Govenor of Judea.

Compare, what Muhammad taught with what Jesus taught.
Compare the life of Jesus and how He treated people, men, women and children, with what Muhammad taught and how he treated people, men, women, children.
Muhammad and Jesus are world's apart, distinct as Darkness is from Light.

That is from a hadith, not the Quran. The hadiths are written by other interpreters of the words of the prophet, as they are not the words in the Quran itself it cannot be trusted. In the same way the words of Prophet Jesus can be manipulated for personal gain (because all humans are flawed and imperfect), the hadiths can unfortunately be manipulated for the gain of the writer. A reader of the Quran (does not have to be Muslim), would be aware that Allah has strictly forbidden intercourse outside of marriage. The same rule is in the Bible. That is "best case" (I use this term very loosely) adultery and infidelity, and worse case (more realistic) rape. Both forbidden by Allah. I would struggle with trusting a disciple of Prophet Jesus over the Prophet himself and I would struggle to trust a disciple of Prophet Muhammad over Prophet Muhammad himself. Both prophets in both religions are written to be pure and free from evil, their respective disciples are not.
